Characteristics of Successful Schools - High Academic Standards: Academic standards provide a clear definition of expectations for all students and serve as a common target for students, staff and parents. Citizenship Initiative - Standards of the Heart: The Wisconsin Youth Risk Behavior Survey and Search Institute’s research found that high school students who report positive values along with social support and high expectations from schools, parents and the community are much more likely to avoid risky behaviors and do well in school. DPI 2006 High School Task Force Report: Online pdf of the State Superintendent’s High School Task Force Report. Seventy education advocates and leaders along with business and community representatives from across Wisconsin were appointed to a high school task force to ensure that high school students graduate with the knowledge and skills they need to be successful. The study includes the work of the task force, recommendations and additional resources related to the topic of success in postsecondary education, the high skills workplace and as citizens of a global economy.

DPI Precollege Scholarship Program: The WEOP (Wisconsin Educational Opportunity Programs) team helps educationally and economically disadvantaged students continue their education. Precollege scholarships are available for students eligible for free and reduced lunch so they can have the experience of being on a college campus and take advantage of precollege academic offerings. Service-Learning: Service-Learning provides an opportunity for partnerships between academic work and service to the community. Statewide System of Support (SSOS) - Characteristics of Successful Districts:
